THE DIFFERENCE THE PSYCHOLOGICAL SUPPORT WOULD MAKE - BY HARRIET’S MOM
Age Harriet was when diagnosed: 9 years old
Type of cancer: Rhabdomyosarcoma
Treatment received: 9 rounds of intensive chemotherapy, 6 weeks of proton therapy, surgery to remove the tumour, 12 months of maintenance chemotherapy
Siblings: Harriet has 2 siblings
The affect on siblings:
Her sister has really struggled. It is hard to understand the seriousness of cancer as a child and so often all you see is your sibling getting lots of attention and your plans always being cancelled.
The difference psychological support would make:
At the start Harriet was so frightened of any form of medical procedure it would take at least 2 hours and a lot of medical staff and tears for even the simplest procedure to take place, e.g. taking medicine. It took two days to calm her down to have her first dose of chemotherapy. Every time she went into hospital she was severely sick from anxiety. This then had a knock on effect.
